Plus-Size Pattern Making: Custom-Fit Sewing Patterns for Sizes 50–72+

Plus-size sewers face the worst version of the pattern-fitting problem: most commercial patterns are drafted on small fit-models and mathematically "graded up" — which distorts proportions more with every size step. The result: armholes in the wrong place, gaping backs, and a chronically poor selection of designs.

Why graded-up patterns distort

Grading assumes bodies grow uniformly in all directions. They don't. Bust, waist and hip grow at different rates; shoulder width barely changes. By the time a size-38 block has been graded to a 56, the proportions belong to nobody.

Custom drafting flips the logic

Instead of scaling a small pattern up, the Lutterloh XL/XXL edition drafts each design directly from your bust and hip measurements — the pattern is born at your size, with your proportions. The XL/XXL set covers sizes 50–72 and beyond, with a dedicated tape-measure scale for larger radii.

Designed for real bodies, not resized ones

  • Mixed sizing built in: top pieces from bust, bottom pieces from hip — the most common plus-size fitting problem (different top/bottom sizes) disappears.
  • Bodies change: lose or gain, and you simply draft the next pattern at the new measurement. No repurchasing.
  • Current designs: quarterly supplements include XL/XXL collections, so plus-size sewers get new fashion — not an afterthought.
